What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking a dedicated and creative Postdoctoral Appointee to work both independently and with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to design, implement, and analyze design studies and experiments. The successful candidate will have a chance to work within both Sandia’s wind and water power technologies groups.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Integrate new sensors into a wind turbine control systems
Work on design of robotic systems, design of wave energy converter controllers and power take-off (PTO) mechanisms
Development of software tools to aid design tasks or data processing
Support field experiments on research wind turbines
Manage software configurations and upgrades
Document work through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations
Qualifications We Require:
PhD in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil Engineering or closely related STEM field
Experience with dynamic systems modeling and control design
Experience with real-time implementation of system solutions in a variety of hardware platforms
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite more than 50% of the time.
Qualifications We Desire:
Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink
Familiarity or experience with wave energy and/or ocean engineering
Communicate research results effectively through written, oral, and other creative media methods to appropriate partners, including the funding customer
About Our Team:
Sandia’s Water Power Technologies Department performs research and development to improve performance, lower costs, and accelerate the deployment of water power technologies. The primary focus area of the department’s work is Marine Hydrokinetics (MHK) research with lower levels of effort in Offshore Wind (OW) and Hydropower. The department is responsible for all aspects of Marine Hydrokinetic device design, performance, system reliability, system integration, and environmental evaluations for the Department of Energy’s Wind and Water Power Technologies Office and in collaboration with industry partners. Offshore Wind Energy activities currently include Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) design and analysis and foundation scour. Hydropower efforts focus on seasonal simulation and optimization. Through partnerships with industry, academia, other National Labs, and public dissemination of results, Sandia serves an important role in energy security for the nation

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia’s discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
Employees must remain in their current position for one year before applying for a new position, with the exception of student interns.
