Delft University of Technology

We invite you to apply for a Postdoc position in numerical simulations of flexible wave energy converters.

Job description
In the pursuit of the transition towards renewable energies, ocean wave energy is one of the renewable energy sources with greatest potential. However, there is the need of fundamental scientific research to enable ground-breaking ways to harvest energy from ocean waves more efficiently.

In this project we will focus on a new disruptive paradigm: Flexible wave energy converters, which have the potential to be more resilient, cheaper and efficient than traditional wave energy converters. In particular, we will study their hydro-electro-elastic behaviour by developing a novel numerical model able to characterize floating thin elastic structures with embedded energy converters.

We offer a 1 year Postdoc position with focus in both research (60%) and education (40%). During your postdoctoral fellowship you will work on:

Development of Finite Element methods able to simulate hydro-visco-elastic problems of floating thin structures. The new methods will be implemented using the pure Julia library Gridap.jl
Education activities related to a new course on Floating and Submerged Structures in the new Civil Engineering Master curriculum.
You will be part of the Offshore Engineering section in the Hydraulic Engineering department, advised by Oriol Colomés, and with close collaboration with other group members experts in the field of offshore energy. As part of this project, you will also work in close collaboration with industrial partners in the field.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with the following qualifications:

PhD in Civil Engineering, Offshore Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or equivalent;
Proven background in one or more of the following fields: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Computational Solid Mechanics, Finite Element methods, Offshore hydrodynamics, Structural dynamics, FLuid-Structure interaction;
Good programming skills in: Julia, Python, C++ or Fortran.

Conditions of employment
